Kottayam: The Kottayam cyber police team in India has made an arrest in connection with a fraud case involving a Changanassery resident. According to reports, a Nigerian national named Isichiku, aged 26, was apprehended in Delhi for duping a Changanassery housewife and extorting an enormous sum of Rs 81 lakh. The fraudster reportedly used Facebook to connect with the victim, who lived in Chettipuzha, and posed as a woman named Anna Morgan from the UK. The fraudster lured the victim into believing that they had sent a gift worth Rs. 30 crore as part of the Independence Day celebration in August 2021. The victim was then asked to pay Rs 22,000 as customs duty prescribed by the Reserve Bank, and the fraudster sent photos and videos of the gift via WhatsApp.
As the victim continued to receive calls from individuals claiming to be customs officials from various airports, she sent money to the fraudster’s account on several occasions from July 2021 to July 2022. Eventually, the victim became suspicious and filed a complaint with the Kottayam district police chief in July 2022. Following an investigation, a cyber police case was registered, leading to the arrest of the Nigerian national. This case serves as a cautionary tale to individuals who must be wary of fraudulent individuals and scams that target unsuspecting individuals through social media and other online platforms.
