<![CDATA[Chennai City Police Commissioner (CoP) Mr. S George said here today that non students, anti-social elements and miscreants had entered the Jallikattu protests held at the Marina on Monday and diverted the demands forcing the Police to use force to disperse the crowd. He said quoting intelligence reports. Chennai which witnessed large-scale violence due to Jallikattu protests turning violent on Monday will return to normal on Tuesday after nearly seven days of students protest. Nearly 40 miscreants indulging in sporadic incidents across Chennai had been arrested on Monday. Addressing the press here, Mr. George said that the Police had asked the protesters to withdraw their protest and gave them time to disperse. Mylapore Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Mr. V Balakrishnan had held talks with the students and advised them to withdraw and around 4500 supporters returned to their houses, Mr. George said. The problems were created by non-students, he added. "It was not the intention of the Police to harm the public, but they argued with the police and pelted stones. The Police had no choice but to use their force to restrain their entry towards the beach. Stones were pelted at eight places and Bells road and Ice House Police station were worst affected", the Police Commissioner said. 94 policemen and senior officers were injured and 51 Police vehicles have been damaged, the CoP said. "7000 Police personnel had been deployed in the city among whom 1000 were sub-inspectors who are under training. Still there were protests happening in 98 places," Mr George said. More police personnel will be deployed and patrolling will be stepped up on Tuesday in order to ensure safety, he said.]]>
