<![CDATA[A fortnight’s search by the police for the men who attacked two beat constables and stole their rifle on January 18 culminated early Friday morning with the police opening fire on the accused in Yelahanka New Town. The leader of the gang had been arrested in Madhya Pradesh on February 1. After questioning him, the police were able to track the remaining four members. The gang was captured in a joint operation by the Bengaluru police and a team from Indore, Madhya Pradesh(M.P). The men arrested are Raj Singh, 35, Ajambai Singh, 25, Chethan Remasingh, 19, Suresh Khodria Meher, 19, and Abubai Singh Meher, 21. All of them hail from Bagoli village in Madhya Pradesh . Hours after the constables had been attacked in January at Kodegahalli, special teams led by Mr.S. Girish, DCP Northeast division, gathered CCTV footage and Call Detail Record details from mobile towers close to the crime scene. All clues pointed to Raj Singh, who had fled to his village in M.P. When a team of the city police, with the help of their M.P. counterparts, went to Bagoli and arrested him, all the other villagers rallied around him and staged a protest. The police told that they somehow got him to Bengaluru. He was the one who had snatched the rifle from the constables and discarded it in an isolated place in Yelahanka New Town. Police learnt that the men follow a fixed modus operandi: they migrate to various cities with their families and live on the outskirts. They commit petty theft before returning to their village. “While the women stayed in the makeshift houses with their children, the male members venture out into the city to commit crimes,” the police told. Besides Bengaluru, the gang operated in Mysuru and Tumakuru in Karnataka, and allegedly committed similar crimes in Andhra Pradhesh, Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. An inspector, a sub-inspector and a constable sustained injuries in Friday’s operation. Three of the accused were shot in the leg. Police Commissioner Mr. T. Suneel Kumar lauded the team that caught the gang and gave them a monetary reward of Rs.2 lakh. We on behalf of Police News Plus E - News congratulate the police officers involved in the operation in arresting the accused who attacked the police constables and snatched their rifles and fled.]]>
