Tirunelveli City, Tamil Nadu : Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner, Shri N. Manivannan, IPS, has issued an important advisory to the public alerting them about various forms of cybercrime currently targeting citizens.
According to the Commissioner, organized cyber fraud groups have been threatening individuals through video calls, falsely alleging that illegal drugs were dispatched via FedEx Courier from their address, that unlawful financial transactions were conducted through their Aadhaar and bank accounts, and that criminal cases have been filed against them. Using the threat of so-called “digital arrest”, these groups then extort money from victims’ bank accounts.
The public has also been advised to remain cautious about online investment schemes advertised on platforms such as Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The Commissioner warned that investing money without verifying the authenticity of such schemes has resulted in significant financial losses for many.
He further urged citizens not to fall for fake advertisements promising part-time job opportunities, and to never share personal or banking details with unknown persons offering lucrative returns. Students were specifically advised to avoid sharing bank account information with strangers claiming to assist with scholarship disbursement, as well as to refrain from sending personal photographs to unknown individuals online due to potential misuse.
The Police Commissioner appealed to the public to immediately report any suspicious or fraudulent activities to the toll-free cyber helpline 1930. Complaints may also be lodged at the City Cyber crime Police Station or through the National Cyber crime Reporting Portal at (http://www.cybercrime.gov.in).
