Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: In a major crackdown aimed at maintaining public order and curbing criminal activities, the Tirunelveli District Police arrested 11 individuals in a single day under various preventive detention laws.
Four individuals — Perachchi Selvi (38), Shanmugasundaram (33), Marimuthu (30), and Kingslin Koil Raj (32) — who were repeatedly involved in ganja-related offences under the limits of Thazhayyuthu, Thirukkurungudi, Manur and Veeravanallur police stations, were detained under the Goondas Prevention and Control Act. Acting on the recommendation of District Superintendent of Police Dr. V. Prasanna Kumar, the detention orders were issued by District Collector I. Sukumar.
Following the orders, Perachchi Selvi was lodged in the Madurai Women’s Prison, while the other three were remanded to the Palayamkottai Central Prison.
In a parallel action within city limits, seven other habitual offenders were detained under the Prevention of Gangsters Act. Among them were Murugan alias Sivamurugan (36) of Melapalayam, Proskan Yasar (29), Chintha Mathar (22), Ramasubramanian (29) of Thachanallur, Rakesh (23), and Kokkirakulam Madasamy (42) of Krishnaperi, Palayapet, who was involved in attempt-to-murder cases.
The preventive detention was recommended by Deputy Commissioners of Police Mr. Vinod Shantharam (East) and Mr. Vijayakumar (West). Based on their recommendations, Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Manivannan ordered the detention of the seven individuals, who were subsequently lodged in the Palayamkottai Central Jail on February 28, 2026.
Police officials reiterated their firm commitment to maintaining law and order, stating that stringent action will continue against those involved in activities that threaten public peace and safety.
