<![CDATA[The City Police in an attempt to introduce the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), which is functional in several metros has prepared and given the proposal to the civic body mentioning its requirements to modernize traffic management under the Smart City Project. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sujit Kumar said that the proposal was handed over to the civic body with the clearance of the Police Commissioner Mr.K. Periaiah. ITMS comprises of advanced traffic management techniques such as adaptive traffic signal, red light violation detection system, automatic number plate recognition system, variable message sign board and speed detector which are primarily operated with a network of high definition cameras and sensors. These techniques are presently functional in cities such as Hyderabad and Bengaluru, he said. Coimbatore is having an estimated vehicle population of 11 lakh and nearly 300 new vehicles are being added to its roads a day. As per assessment by the police, funds to the tune of Rs.100 crore will be required to implement ITMS. Around 1,000 high quality surveillance cameras will be required for various components. As of now the city police have around 200 surveillance cameras. Mr. Kumar said that apart from improving the traffic, ITMS will reduce manpower deployed for traffic management in key places. Adaptive traffic signal will work with sensors and cameras which detect the vehicle flow on road for automatic operation of traffic signals. Red light violation detection system comprising high quality surveillance cameras will automatically detect vehicles that violate red signal. Fines will be issued to the violators by identifying the registration number of the vehicles caught in camera. Automatic number plate recognition system will be used to control traffic violations, law and order management and crime detection. Mr. Kumar, who recently visited Hyderabad to have a first hand experience on ITMS said that variable message sign boards placed on key road can alert motorists on traffic jams, traffic diversions and warnings. This can also be used for alerting motorists on availability of parking lots.]]>
