Kottayam, Kerala: In the interest of public safety and responsible road usage, the Traffic Police have urged all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicles are covered with valid insurance before taking them on the road.
Police officials highlighted that vehicle insurance not only protects the vehicle but also safeguards the lives and financial security of passengers, pedestrians and other road users. Accidents are unpredictable, and in the event of mishaps, victims may suffer minor or serious injuries, permanent disability or even loss of life. Insurance coverage plays a crucial role in providing financial support to the injured persons and their dependents, while also covering losses due to vehicle damage.
The police cautioned that if an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, the vehicle owner and the driver will be fully liable to bear the compensation and losses, which could result in severe financial burden. As per Section 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, driving or permitting an uninsured vehicle attracts penal action, including fines and imprisonment for repeat offences.
Emphasising prevention over penalty, the Traffic Police appealed to the public not to take insurance lightly. Instead of risking heavy financial losses and legal consequences, vehicle owners are advised to renew their insurance on time and ensure continuous coverage.
The Police reiterated that strict enforcement drives will continue against vehicles without valid insurance and called upon all motorists to cooperate in making roads safer for everyone.
