Tamil Nadu, Tiruvallur: In compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive to assess the availability of basic amenities for prison inmates, a high-level inspection was conducted at Ponneri Sub-Jail by a specially constituted committee. The inspection aimed to uphold human dignity and improve correctional infrastructure.
The inspection team comprised District Collector Mr. Prathap, Principal District Judge Juliet Pushpa, and Chief Criminal Judge Meenakshi, along with senior officials from 22 government departments including Health, Fire & Rescue Services, and Social Welfare. Their coordinated effort underscores the government’s commitment to humane and secure prison management.
The team meticulously reviewed the provision of clean drinking water, hygienic sanitation, food quality, and essential facilities available to inmates. Key records such as the inmate handover register, para register, jail logbook, and weapon room inventory were also examined for accuracy and transparency.
Officials assessed the condition of inmate cells, interview rooms, and the overall structural integrity of the facility. Stock verification of food supplies and an evaluation of kitchen hygiene were carried out to ensure nutritional standards are being met.
Importantly, the committee engaged directly with inmates to gather feedback on legal aid availability, educational programs, and healthcare services, reaffirming a welfare-centric approach to prison administration.
This proactive initiative reflects the State Government and Police Department’s commitment to maintaining secure, humane, and rehabilitative correctional institutions in line with constitutional values and judicial guidance.
