Andaman and Nicobar Island, Diglipur: A press conference held by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of North & Middle Andaman regarding the alleged murder of journalist Mr. Sahadev Dey has triggered widespread public outcry in Diglipur. The remarks made by the SP during the briefing have come under sharp criticism, particularly from Mr. Dey’s family and friends, who have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation.
During the conference, the SP made claims about the journalist’s personal life, alleging an extramarital affair. These statements have been met with strong opposition, especially from Mr. Dey’s wife, who has categorically refuted the allegations, calling them baseless and disrespectful. “I have unwavering trust in my husband. These accusations are completely false and deeply distressing. I have lost faith in this investigation,” she stated, demanding that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a fair and impartial probe.
Friends and colleagues of Mr. Sahadev Dey have also raised concerns over the investigation’s direction and the police’s public statements. Many have questioned the basis of the SP’s claims, given that the investigation is still ongoing. One resident voiced concerns, saying, “How can the police make such statements without presenting conclusive evidence? This appears to be an attempt to malign the victim rather than ensuring justice.”
There are also growing apprehensions regarding delays in forensic examinations and evidence collection. Reports indicate that forensic teams were not deployed promptly, raising fears that crucial evidence may have been compromised.
According to the police, the primary accused, identified as Mr. Gangaiah, has confessed to the crime and provided details about the disposal of the body. However, critics argue that authorities must present concrete evidence before making such claims public. Questions have also been raised about the retrieval of Mr. Dey’s mobile phone and call records, which could provide critical insights into the events leading up to his murder.
Amid mounting pressure, Mr. Dey’s family, members of the press, and civil society representatives are calling for greater transparency in the investigation. Protesters are demanding a high-level inquiry into the police’s handling of the case to ensure justice is served.
