Shillong: The Special SP CID Mr. Deepak Kr. Palecha, IPS while giving the public advisory to the citizens said his office has received several complaints in which victims have received friend requests in Facebook from an unknown person wherein they develop an online relationship following which the victim will be tempted to initiate video chat sessions in What Sapp or Facebook messenger. During such calls, the victims expose themselves inappropriately.
Such video chats are then recorded by criminals who are used to blackmail them and then a certain amount of money is extorted. At times criminals also morph the image or video to make it appear obscene. It is therefore strongly advised not to accept any unethical or indecent request made by a stranger during a video call. Screen recording of such video sessions may be misused by cyber fraudsters for blackmail or threat. Beware when you accept a friend request from an unknown person on social media sites and always keep your personal information confidential. If you are a victim of such crimes, you should report the matter immediately to the cybercrime cell so that necessary action can be given on time. You can also report such matters at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
