Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, December 26: In a proactive move to further strengthen road safety, District Superintendent of Police Sri K.V. Maheshwara Reddy emphasized the need for scientific and data-driven measures to prevent road accidents in Srikakulam district. He was speaking at the District Road Safety Committee meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday.

Addressing officials, the SP directed all concerned departments to intensify preventive and protective measures at identified accident-prone ‘blackspots’. Presenting detailed statistics, he highlighted a positive downward trend in road accidents and fatalities during 2025, reflecting the impact of coordinated enforcement and awareness efforts.

According to the data shared, road accidents, which stood at 810 in 2023 and increased to 889 in 2024, have significantly reduced to 699 accidents as of December 25, 2025. Similarly, fatal accidents, which were 281 and 279 in the previous two years, have come down to 245 this year, marking an encouraging improvement. However, the SP expressed concern over the rise in injury cases and called for focused intervention.

The SP identified over-speeding, drunk driving, and failure to wear helmets as the primary causes of fatal accidents. He instructed enforcement agencies to remain extra vigilant during critical months, noting higher fatalities in November 2024 and March and May 2025.

Specific directions were issued to the R&B and National Highway authorities to install warning signboards, blinkers, and safety indicators at dangerous curves and junctions, and to take strict action against traffic violators. Plans were ordered for road expansion at Navabharata Junction, while speed breakers were directed to be installed immediately at Bhairavanipet Junction.

The SP also warned that RTC buses stopping dangerously on roads would be seized, underlining the zero-tolerance approach towards traffic violations that endanger public safety. He further informed that the Central Government has declared January as Road Safety Month, and district-level awareness and enforcement programmes are being planned accordingly.

The meeting was attended by District Revenue Officer Sri S.V. Lakshmana Murthy, District Transport Officer Sri Vijaya Sarathi, R&B SE Sri Satyanarayana, along with police and officials from various departments. The coordinated efforts reaffirm the district administration and police department’s strong commitment to saving lives and ensuring safer roads in Srikakulam.
