North and Middle Andaman: On 03.09.2023, an information was received from the Postmaster, Rangat Post Office that a parcel packed with brown colour tape with from address: Ratan Das, Aurodinda Road, Vill+PO-Naihati, Dist-North 24 Pgs, PIN-743165, Ph:9674125862 and to address: Ram Prasad Das, Vill+PO Rangat, N/M Andaman, PIN-744205, FON-9571553703 was received at their Post Office on 01.09.23. Field staff of Post Office had tried their best to locate the receiver and to deliver the said parcel and also tried to contact the recipient over his given phone number, but all efforts were in vain. On suspecting that the said parcel might be containing some incriminating articles owing to which the recipient was not coming forward to receive the parcel, the Post Master, Rangat Post Office was directed to pass the information to SHO, Rangat Police Station, if anyone came forward to collect the said parcel from Post Office, Rangat. Also, secret informers were also deployed in and around the Post Office for surveillance. As per the norms of Indian Postal Service, if any claimant doesn’t come forward for claiming any parcel, the said parcel will be returned to the sender address after the lapse of 07 days time. That in order to avert the same, a letter was sent to the Post Master, Rangat from SHO Rangat Police Station requesting therein for retaining the said parcel upto the time to which any receiver comes to collect the said parcel or till getting clearance from Police side.
Later on, 22/09/2023, the Post Master, Rangat informed that almost 21 days’ time has been passed since the receipt of the said parcel at their end, but till date no one came forward to claim the said parcel and here the retention time has already been lapsed at their end and they can’t keep the said parcel for long as per the prescribed norms. Accordingly, as per the direction of SDPO Rangat the parcel has been taken over by Police under proper execution of handing and taking over memo in presence of two prominent persons of the region. Further, the suspected parcel was open at Post Office, Rangat itself in presence of witnesses to rule out the presence of any incriminating article present in said parcel. Upon opening the same, about 3.738 Kgs. of ganja was found inside the parcel, which was later taken into custody under the cover of seizure memo and a case under NDPS Act, 1985 was registered against the sender and recipient addressees.
