Siliguri: Bhaktinagar police have arrested some people for allegedly posing as policemen and extorting money for stopping vehicles on NH 10. This came after a person filed a complaint saying that he had become a victim of extortion.
Anil Saha, a driver by profession, Champasari, Pradhan Nagar Police Station, said the men had forced him to pay Rs.700. Police acted swiftly and arrested four persons, identified as Dilip Lohar (29), in the early hours of 18.07.2021 near, Salugara, Jalpaiguri; Raj Lohar (21); Nitesh Tamang (20), Son Buddha Tamang, and Shiv Shankar Mahato (23).
These four men were allegedly stopping the vehicles on the 8th Mile (the boundary of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate jurisdiction), pretending to be police officers, checking their documents, and demanding money from the drivers.
Apart from the Bolero vehicle, the police have also recovered a torchlight, a seal of a doctor’s name, and many other items from the accused. Bolero vehicles have a sticker written POLITE to deceive the drivers at night. An inter-state criminal gang has been busted with the timely intervention of the police. They have been charged under relevant sections of the law and a specific case is being initiated against them.
