Siliguri: A smuggler was arrested with penguin shells as he was smuggling them to Nepal from Siliguri on 21 January 2021. The forest personnel of the Salugada range of the Baikunthpur Forest Division has arrested a smuggler with a large number of penguin shells being smuggled to Nepal by conducting an operation based on intelligence. According to forest department sources, the smuggler was arrested on Wednesday night after a campaign was conducted near Balasan Setu in Siliguri enclosed Matigada on the basis of intelligence of smuggling of penguin shells to Nepal.
However, as soon as the forest department got the idea of the campaign, other smugglers escaped from there. The smuggler’s name is being described as Murshid Alam.M aged 26. He hails from Patalakhawa, Alipurduar. A large number of penguin shells have been recovered from him in a school bag. The bike has also been recovered from his possession.
On Thursday, he was produced at Siliguri Mahakama Hospital where the judge rejected his bail plea and sent him to police remand. It is worth noting that the meat of penguin and its flakes and other parts are in great demand in the international market. It is prepared for the treatment of complex diseases.
