Fatehabad, Haryana, June 18: In a timely warning to the public, Superintendent of Police Shri Siddhant Jain, IPS, has cautioned citizens against a new and dangerous cyber fraud technique wherein criminals are duping people by sending fake traffic challan links. The fraudulent scheme, which mimics official communications, is causing serious financial losses to unsuspecting individuals.
The modus operandi involves sending fake traffic challan notifications through SMS, WhatsApp, or email, informing recipients of a “pending challan.” The messages contain a link, often designed to appear similar to an official government portal. Once clicked, the link redirects the user to a fraudulent website that closely resembles genuine platforms and prompts the person to enter their banking or UPI details to pay the fake challan.
In some cases, these fraudulent sites also prompt the download of remote access applications such as AnyDesk or QuickSupport. Once installed, these apps allow the fraudsters to remotely control the victim’s phone, giving them access to banking apps, SMS messages, and confidential data, which are then misused for large-scale financial theft.
Public Advisory by SP Siddhant Jain, IPS:
Verify traffic challans only on official portals, such as echallan.parivahan.gov.in
Official website of your respective State Police
Do not click on suspicious links received via SMS, WhatsApp, or email, especially if they claim to be related to challan payments or government dues.
Never share personal banking details, OTPs, or UPI PINs with unknown individuals or platforms.
Do not install unknown mobile applications, especially if prompted via suspicious messages or websites.
In case of suspected fraud or suspicious activity:
Immediately dial the Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930
Report online at: www.cybercrime.gov.in
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
SP Siddhant Jain emphasized that cybercrime is evolving with increasing sophistication, and public awareness is the strongest defense. “This is not just a scam—it is an organized digital crime that preys on trust and panic. Only vigilance and responsible digital behavior can shield you from such traps,” he said.
The Fatehabad Police Department urges all residents to share this information with family, friends, and especially senior citizens, who are more vulnerable to such frauds.
