Fatehabad, Haryana, Jan. 3: Superintendent of Police Mr. Siddhant Jain, IPS, has issued strong public advisory warning citizens about a new and dangerous cyber fraud known as the “Digital Arrest Scam.” He cautioned that cyber criminals are increasingly using fear and intimidation to cheat innocent people of their hard-earned money.
Explaining the modus operandi, SP Jain said fraudsters contact victims through phone or video calls, impersonating officials from agencies such as the CBI, NIA, Cyber Cell, or local police. Victims are falsely told that they are involved in serious crimes like money laundering, drug trafficking, or terrorism. To create panic, the callers share fake identity cards, arrest warrants, and forged government documents, and threaten the victim with a so-called “digital arrest.”
Under this false pretext, victims are instructed to remain constantly on camera and are pressured into sharing bank details, OTPs, passwords, and UPI information, resulting in financial loss.
Common Warning Signs Identified:
* Video or threatening calls from unknown numbers
* Callers claiming to be senior police or central agency officials
* Threats of “digital arrest”
* Pressure to transfer money, download apps, or share confidential details
SP Siddhant Jain clarified that no arrest or investigation in India is ever conducted over video calls, and no government official can demand money under any circumstances. He urged citizens not to panic, to disconnect such calls immediately, and to inform the authorities.
He also appealed to the public to educate family members—especially senior citizens and those less familiar with technology—about this scam.
Reporting & Assistance:
In case of cyber fraud or suspicion, citizens should immediately:
Report on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal: [www.cybercrime.gov.in] Call the **Cyber Helpline: 1930
Strict Warning to Cybercriminals:
SP Jain assured that the Cyber Cell is on high alert to identify and arrest those involved. Offenders will face stringent action under the IT Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and will not be spared.
SP’s Message: “Don’t be afraid—be aware. Vigilance, common sense, and timely action are the strongest weapons against digital fraud.”
