Thrissur City; The Thrissur City Cyber Crime Police successfully recovered the amount lost through cyber fraud and returned it to the complainant via court proceedings. The complainant had immediately dialed 1930 after the fraud occurred, which played a key role in recovering the funds.
The incident began when a young man from Peachy received a phone call claiming to be from the Mumbai branch of FedEx Courier Service. The caller informed him that a suspicious courier addressed to him, bound for Russia, had been flagged for containing illegal items, leading to a case being registered against him in Mumbai. The call was then transferred to someone posing as a Mumbai cyber police officer, who spoke to the victim via Skype.
Through manipulation, the fraudsters convinced the man that he was under arrest and needed funds to resolve the issue. They secured an instant loan of Rs.1,755,281 in his name, which was then transferred in full. Realizing he had been scammed after sending the money, the young man immediately reported the matter by calling 1930.
A case was filed with the Thrissur City Cyber Police, who launched an investigation. The team traced the money to a bank in Delhi and discovered that the account had been frozen, thanks to the quick action of contacting the 1930 helpline. As a result, the cybercriminals were unable to move the funds, allowing the police to recover the entire amount.
The police credited the swift call to 1930 during the “golden hour” for the successful freezing and recovery of the funds. The investigation team was led by Cyber Crime Police Station Inspector Sudheesh Kumar VS, with assistance from Sub Inspector Faisal, Senior Civil Police Officer Vinod S Shankar, and Civil Police Officer Anoop.
Authorities have emphasized that no investigating officer will ever request money to pursue an investigation. It is crucial to follow cyber safety measures to avoid falling victim to such scams. If you receive suspicious calls, ask for the caller’s details and verify them by contacting emergency services at 112. Always heed the safety instructions issued by the Kerala Police and other district authorities via social media. Avoid clicking on suspicious links, sharing OTPs or personal financial information, and downloading unfamiliar applications. Refrain from answering video calls from unknown individuals. In case of cyber fraud, report it immediately to the Cyber Crime Portal (http://www.cybercrime.gov.in) or dial the helpline number 1930.
