Karnataka, Belagavi: A Muslim youth allegedly pelted stones at the Ashwathama temple in Pangula Galli, Belgaum city, Gadi district, creating temporary unrest in the area. The locals apprehended the accused and handed him over to the police.
The accused, identified as Yasir from Ujjwal Nagar, reportedly threw stones at the temple last night. Residents immediately intervened, restrained him, and attempted to assault him. Yasir pleaded for forgiveness, admitting that he had acted out of anger after witnessing individuals dancing in burqas earlier.
Revenge Over Previous Incident
During interrogation, Yasir, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time, confessed that his actions were motivated by an incident on Holi, where some people had danced wearing burqas. His stone-pelting was an act of retaliation. The locals, after tying him to a pole and beating him, handed him over to the Belgaum Market police station.
Security Measures Tightened
Given the sensitivity of the situation, the city police have deployed a KSRP squad in Pangalu Galli as a precautionary measure. Security has been increased under the leadership of the PSI to prevent further unrest.
The incident has further strained communal harmony in Belagavi, which has already been experiencing tensions over language conflicts. Just a day earlier, a similar stone-pelting incident in Bekkeri village, Raibaga taluk, led to unrest following a social media post. Additionally, the city witnessed tension after an attack on a bus conductor, adding to the already volatile atmosphere.
