Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: Reflecting the firm commitment of the Tirunelveli District Police to protect women and children, 29 accused in POCSO cases have been convicted by courts so far this year, including one person sentenced to death, according to a press release issued by District Superintendent of Police Sri N. Silambarasan, IPS.
The SP stated that as part of sustained efforts to completely prevent sexual offences against women and children, the Tirunelveli Police are actively conducting awareness programmes in schools and colleges across the district. Special focus is being given to cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, with sub-divisional police officers closely monitoring investigations and court proceedings to ensure timely trials and stringent punishment for offenders.
As a result of this rigorous follow-up, 29 accused in 28 POCSO cases have been convicted during the current year. The convictions include one death sentence, one sentence of 25 years rigorous imprisonment, four sentences of 20 years rigorous imprisonment, four life imprisonment sentences, and one sentence of 16 years rigorous imprisonment.
In addition, the SP noted that 26 persons involved in POCSO-related offences have been detained under the Goondas Act, underscoring the district police’s zero-tolerance approach towards crimes against children.
The Tirunelveli Police reaffirmed their resolve to continue strong legal action, effective monitoring, and preventive awareness initiatives to ensure justice for victims and a safer environment for women and children.
