Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: The Tirunelveli Cyber Crime Police have issued an alert following a spate of fraudulent calls targeting parents of school students in the district. In a recent case, a man impersonating an official from the District Collector’s office contacted the parents of a student from the Thachanallur area. By correctly providing the student’s name and class, he obtained the parents’ bank account details and illegally withdrew approximately ₹78,000.
Similar scams have been reported in Pettai and Palayamkottai areas, where four other families were defrauded, with total losses amounting to ₹1,88,000. Investigations into these cases are underway, and authorities have urged parents to remain vigilant.
The Metropolitan Cyber Crime Police emphasized that scholarship-related frauds are on the rise and advised parents not to share bank details, OTPs, or passwords with anyone, even if the caller claims to be a government official. Parents are encouraged to verify any official communication independently.
Victims of cyber fraud are urged to immediately report incidents by calling the toll-free number 1930 or registering complaints via the official cybercrime website. The police reiterated that public awareness and caution are key to preventing such crimes.
