Delhi: The Canine Squad of the Delhi Police Crime Branch follows a disciplined routine on VIP routes, metro stations, markets, airports, and railway stations in Delhi City. The dogs will soon be deployed in all ranges of the capital to assist local police in tracking, detection, and investigative work, officials said on Sunday.
The dog squad currently consists of 64 trained dogs which consist of German Shepherds, Labradors, Belgian Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. Of the 64 dogs, 49 were trained to detect explosives.
These dog squads are also part of Republic Day, Independence Day, and other police parades where they parade with their handlers.
From retrieving stolen goods, locating explosives, locating narcotics to searching for missing children, dogs are well trained and follow a strict diet and routine.
DCP (Crime) Mr. Manoj C said, “Dogs play a vital role in the safety and security of the city. We have had incidents of dogs being used as guards in courts, malls, markets, and even the airport. The Dog Squad trained at the Indian Army Remount and Veterinary Corps base in Meerut, some of whom trained at the Border Security Force (BSF) in Madhya Pradesh, and are now ready to work with various police teams.
After training dogs to detect explosives, police have hired 19 handlers for personal training in Meerut. Dog training begins at six months of age.
Currently, the dogs are deployed at 10 police stations in Model Town, Chanakyapuri, Kalyanpuri, Darya Ganj, Sabzi Mandi, Maurya Enclave, RK Puram, Dwarka, Janakpuri, and Saket in Delhi.
North Delhi DCP Mr. Sagar Singh Kalsi said the dog squad had been stationed at the Sabzi Mandi police station for a long time. The center is headed by ASI Mr. Jitendra Dogra, who is said to be guarding four Labradors and a German Shepherd, three of which are dogs that detect explosions and the other two are tracker dogs.
