Telangana, Hyderabad City: In a commendable initiative led by A. Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of Telangana, the state has taken significant steps to recognize and empower the transgender community. Orders were issued to appoint transgender individuals as Traffic Assistants in the Hyderabad Traffic Police Department. Key discussions regarding this initiative were held by Smt. Anitha Ramachandran, IAS (Women and Child Welfare Department), Ravi Gupta, IPS (Principal Secretary, Home Department), and C.V. Anand, IPS (Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad), in collaboration with transgender representatives. These meetings culminated in the issuance of recruitment orders.
Today, as part of this effort, a recruitment event for Traffic Assistants was conducted at the Goshamahal Police Ground in Hyderabad, based on a list of candidates provided by the Social Welfare Department. The event was overseen by a recruitment committee comprising the DCP (South West), Home Guard Commandant, and Additional DCP (CAR), along with officials from the Welfare Department.
The eligibility criteria for candidates included being Indian citizens aged between 18 and 40 years, holding at least an SSC qualification, possessing a personal identity card issued by the District Magistrate, and being local residents within the Hyderabad Commissionerate limits. Specific physical requirements were also outlined, such as a minimum height of 165 cm for transgender women (160 cm for STs), along with assessments in 800-meter running, long jump, and shot-put.
A total of 58 transgender individuals participated in the recruitment process, resulting in the selection of 44 candidates, comprising 29 transgender women and 15 transgender men. Addressing the recruits, C.V. Anand, IPS (Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad), encouraged them to serve as role models for their community and uphold the reputation of the Hyderabad Police and Telangana State Police Department.
