Kerala, Kasaragod: The District Police said “An old saying goes, ‘It’s better not to attend an uninvited wedding,’ and it holds true even today. In modern times, we must be cautious of wedding invitations received from unknown numbers on social media. While they may appear to be harmless, clicking on such invitations can lead to scams. These fraudulent wedding invitations often come as APK files, enabling cybercriminals to access personal information on your phone.
Such fake digital invitations are commonly shared via WhatsApp. Clicking the link in these invitations typically redirects users to a malicious website, where they are prompted to download a file. Doing so installs malware on the device, granting fraudsters access to sensitive information stored on the phone, including saved contacts, passwords for online banking, and even social media accounts. Using this information, they may impersonate you to extort money from your friends and acquaintances.
To protect yourself, never click on or download files from unknown wedding invitations or links. If you fall victim to such scams, report the incident immediately to the National Cyber Crime Reporting portal by calling the toll-free number 1930 or filing a complaint online at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
