BHUBANESWAR: A man had to carry the body of his wife from the District Headquarters Hospital in Bhawanipatna to his village on his shoulders in the absence of ambulance service. The incident took place when Agang Majhi, wife of Danu Majhi of Melghara village in Thuamul Rampur block, 60 km from here, was admitted in Bhawanipatna DHH two days ago suffering from tuberculosis. She, however, died late on Tuesday. Till this morning Agang’s husband was not able to get an ambulance to take her body to his village. In sheer desperation, he wrapped the body of his wife in a cloth, placed it on his shoulders and walked towards his village. After carrying the body for about 10 km, some people took pity on him and informed the district administration. An ambulance was sent from Bhawanipatna to take the body to his village. The woman was admitted in the hospital on 23 August and died the same night, Chief District Medical Officer B Brahma said. However, Danu took the body from the hospital without informing the authorities concerned, he said. An ambulance to carry the body to Melghara village was sent when some locals informed the CDMO about it. By that time, Danu had already covered a distance of 10 km carrying the body on his shoulder. Danu was accompanied by his 12-year-old daughter. ]]>
