Police said on Monday that a 30-year-old tea garden worker Atowa Bek was hacked to death with a machete allegedly by his wife Banchini Bek after an argument in Kokrajhar, one of the Bodo Territorial Administrative Districts in Assam. The officer-in-charge of the Kokrajhar Police Station, Binanda Basumatary, said there was an argument between the husband and wife on Sunday morning. Before going out to work at the Daloabari Tea Estate, Atowa abused and hit her with a brick and again at 9 am he came back to the residential quarters and started abusing her. According to the police, Atowa urged Banchini to leave the house, and then decided to rest in the house with a machete by his side. As he dozed off, Banchini allegedly picked up the machete and attacked him. Mr. Basumatary said that she hit him at least twice on his neck. Atowa died on the spot. Atowa Bek had been abusing Banchini Bek since long. The couple have two children. Police arrested Banchini on Sunday after they were informed of the incident by the neighbours. On Monday she will be produced in front of the magistrate.
