West Bengal: After receiving information through undercover sources, the police arrested the inter-state cannabis smuggling ring at the Jubilee intersection adjacent to the National Highway in Kanyapur area under the North Police Station at Asansol Durgapur Commissionerate. A press conference on the matter was held at Kanyapur home on Wednesday morning in the presence of DC Central Sayak Das.
ACP Central Soumyadeep Bhattacharya, ACP Tathagata Pandey, Asansol North Police Station OC Shantanu Adhikari, Kanyapur Outpost IC Kartar Singh and other officials were present. According to the police statement, they were arrested last night while smuggling the huge quantity of cannabis.
Among the five arrested are one from Asansol, one from Andal police station and one from Kulti police station, three from Asansol under Durgapur Police Commissionerate, one from Sodpur in North 24 Parganas and another from Uttar Pradesh. There were 6 traffickers in total. Two of them somehow escaped, one of them a driver A total of 330 kg of cannabis was recovered after the arrest of the traffickers.
The estimated market value of the rescued Gaza is about 20 lakh rupees. A pickup van and a six-wheeler were also recovered along with the huge quantity of cannabis. One of the two fugitives is a driver and a resident of Orissa. Police are searching for the two. Police have sought a ten-day police remand. Police believe they may be linked to another cannabis smuggling ring arrested a few days ago in the vicinity of Jamuria police station.
