Mohammed Hanifa, Deputy Inspector-General (Prisons), Vellore Range, had reportedly held inquiries at the Salem Central Prison on July 27 over allegations of torture by social activist Piyush Manush when he was lodged in prison for 13 days. Mr. Manush along with two of his associates was arrested on July 8 for protesting against the construction of a railway flyover at Mulluvadi Gate and was lodged at the prison. After Manush was released on conditional bail on July 21, he alleged assault, torture and solitary confinement in the prison. He demanded action against the Superintendent of Prison and Chief Warden. The NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police while the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) issued notice to the ADG (Prisons) to submit reports over the alleged assault of the activist at prison. Prison sources said that the DGP held inquiries with Superintendent of Police Senthil Kumar and also with personnel on duty from July 8 to July 21. Also, the footage of the surveillance camera installed inside the prison was also reviewed. Manush had alleged that the assault on him was captured in the prison camera.]]>
