Kolkata: In a scene straight out of the movies, passersby watched amazed as a procession of three speeding motorbikes weaved in and out through traffic in the Belgachhia area, before one of them was intercepted and a dramatic chase came to an end.
Today at about 2.00 pm, Sergeant Surajit Porel of Shyambazar Traffic Guard was on duty near Belgachia crossing when he noticed a fast-moving black Honda motorbike being chased by another bike at high speed, both two-wheelers westbound along Belgachia Bridge. As the bikes went past, the chaser seemed to indicate that he needed Sergeant Porel’s help.
Without knowing the full story, yet sensing something was wrong, Sergeant Porel began following the two bikes on his own two-wheeler, wishing to intercept the first bike. But this was easier said than done, as his quarry drove dangerously through traffic in a desperate effort to getaway. Finally, Sergeant Porel intercepted the bike and its rider at the northern end of Ghaznavi Bridge near Kolkata Station and was given the complete picture.
Apparently, the thief had attempted to steal the bike from Belgachhia. However, the bike’s inbuilt theft tracking device had shot off a message to its owner Rohit Shaw, who soon arrived at the spot with his brother, who gave chase on a second bike. As he passed Sergeant Porel, he frantically gestured for help during the chase.
All’s well that ends well. Both the stolen motorcycle and its rider are currently in the custody of Ultadanga Police Station.
