Siliguri: On 07.08.21, the Pradhannagar police received a complaint from a lady named Chandrika Y. Lama, retired principal of Surya Army Pre-primary School and a former co-opted member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, about a pet dog being ill-treated by its owner.
The complainant requested the police to help rescue a female German shepherd, as it was alleged that the owner was mistreating the dog by always keeping it in chains, confining the animal in a very narrow space, and not providing her with sufficient food.
Subsequently, a police team headed by sub-inspector Mr. Kalyan Saha set off to verify the allegation and soon found out it was justified. Thereafter, the officer retrieved the dog from its owner, and handed it over to C.Y. Lama on condition that she would nourish the animal properly, and hand it over to an animal shelter home.
A petition has been submitted before the Ld. Court, Siliguri seeking an order to initiate an inquiry into the complaint.
