Kolkata: Sunday last, October 17, was a busy day for Sergeant Ashok Mistri and Constable Subrata Brahmachari of Diamond Harbour Traffic Guard, as they directed rush hour traffic in the middle of a downpour near Behala Tram Depot. Around noon, Mr. Ashok spotted a group of seemingly anxious passersby gathered in front of the tram depot, surrounding something on the ground. Quickly arriving at the scene, he saw a pregnant lady lying on the road, clearly in agonizing labor pain.
Realizing the situation, Mr. Ashok grew anxious himself, but kept his head and called Vidyasagar Hospital to arrange for an ambulance. When it arrived, Mr. Subrata escorted the lady to the hospital, where authorities ensured that she was admitted as soon as possible. As Mr. Ashok continued to handle the heavy traffic on his own, Mr. Subrata called to say that the lady had delivered her baby safely, and that mother and child were doing fine. At the end of his shift, Mr. Ashok actually visited them on his way home.
