CHENNAI: Visible Policing was introduced by Commissioner of Police, Chennai, Mr. George a few years ago, seems like this has started showing its results. Police says that crime rate has drastically fallen in November compared to previous month. The numbers of robbery, burglary and theft cases reported in October were 8, 16, and 120 respectively, according to police statistics. The numbers reported in the said categories in November (up to the 25th) were almost half that figure. The numbers of robbery, burglary and theft cases were 3, 8 and 45 respectively in November. A police officer said though the number of murders and murders for gain was high in the first week of November, all cases were solved in a week. `qu otation gangs’ and goons were not as active as they were previously as the demonetization drive had caused a cash crunch, police said. A number of proactive steps like `visible policing’ had deterred criminals. Visible policing was introduced after a spurt in crimes especially against women and senior citizens. Police said, a combination of beat, picket, and interception elements, it enhanced the confidence of citizens in the law enforcers and people began instantly reporting crimes. Beat officers were specifically instructed to interact with people whenever possible, senior officers said. Station house officers were asked to supervise beats effectively, police added.
