Kolkata : A video which went viral on social media yesterday, showing a man physically torturing a dog on a leash. For those who did not watch the video, it shows the man initially hitting the dog with some sort of plastic container which appears to break, after which he is seen beating the animal with a wooden rod-like object.
The video resulted in a flood of messages to the inbox if the police from outraged netizens, and an official letter of complaint from representative of a NGO. It was on the basis of the letter that Amherst Street Police Station registered a case and a team from the Police Station arrested Anil Prasad, a resident of Ghosh Lane, from his home at around 11.00 pm yesterday under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
The accused is currently in the custody of the police, and Sergeant (Investigation Cadre) Mr. Arghya Saha of Amherst Street Police Station is investigating the case. The rescued dog is in the safe custody of the NGO.
