Chandigarh: On Saturday, the crime branch of Chandigarh Police apprehended an 18-year-old boy, Amrish, for riding a scooter with a fake number plate near the open air theatre in Sector 48. During a routine checking at a naka, the police stopped the young boy for inspection, and on verifying the scooter’s registration number, they discovered that it had a motorcycle’s registration number.
Further examination of the scooter’s chassis number revealed that it was stolen from Phase 11, Mohali. Upon contacting the scooter’s owner, Surinder Kaur, who had also registered a complaint regarding the theft at the Phase-11 police station, she identified the vehicle as hers.
Upon interrogation, the police found that Amrish was also involved in the theft of an auto-rickshaw, which was recovered by the police. The teenager was then charged under Sections 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 473 (making or possessing counterfeit seal, etc, with intent to commit forgery), and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused was presented before a court and sent to judicial custody. The police reported that Amrish had no prior criminal record and was a first-time offender. The apprehension of the teenager is another instance of the Chandigarh Police’s efforts to maintain law and order in the city and prevent crimes such as vehicle theft.
