<![CDATA[MUMBAI: The N M Joshi Marg police on Saturday arrested a 19-year-old youth, who was earlier convcited in the Shakti Mill gang rape case for three years, on charges of assault. He was wanted in a fresh case of assault and stabing another youth. Barely two months after he was released, serving his conviction in the infamous Shakti Mills gang rape case, the convict (now an adult) was on the run after an FIR was lodged against him for beating up two brothers to extort money. Another FIR was registered against him and his associates at the Agripada police station last week. The N M Joshi Marg police got information that he was roaming in the Fort area in south Mumbai and arrested him. He has been sent to police custody till Septmber 26. The assault victims, Ajay Matkar and his brother Amit, both were admitted to Nair hospital after the assault. The Matkars have loading and unloading business at the Dhobi Ghat. The accused, alleged the victims, walked into their office a few weeks ago and demanded extortion money of Rs 50,000 a month. When they refused to pay, the convict along with several others beat up Amit and stabbed him on September 11. The incident took place near Kasturba Hospital in Agripada. A case of attempt to murder was registered against the accused including the convict. Earlier, a police team landed at the convict's Bori Chawl residence, as mentioned his address in the Shakti Mills gang rape case. However, police found the chawl has been razed is being redeveloped. Police sources said that they have detained one of the wanted accused, Amit Bhtt, in the assault case. "He was earlier arrested by the Antop Hill police a few years ago in connection with a murder case. He was later acquitted by the court," said a Police officer.]]>
