<![CDATA[Two police personnel, including an officer-in charge, were critically injured following an assault by a mob in the Shyampur area of Howrah district in West Bengal. The officer-in charge of the Shyampur station, Mr. Sumon Das, who sustained head injuries during the assault in the early hours of Saturday, is battling for his life at a city hospital. Apart from the two officials, five other police personnel were injured in the attack. Clashes were going on in Shyampur between two families over a property dispute. Mr. Das and his colleagues were attacked by a mob of about 25 people when they went to the area to arrest an accused . Seven persons had been arrested so far. Cases had been lodged against the accused under several Sections of the IPC, including Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt). Apart from Mr. Das, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mr. Tarun Purkait also sustained serious injuries when he tried to save Mr. Das. The mob attacked the police team with sharp weapons, rods and sticks. According to the district police officials, there have been sporadic clashes in the area between two local groups for a couple of weeks. A large police contingent has been deployed in the area to prevent any further untoward incident.]]>
