Madurai, Tamil Nadu: In a significant step towards strengthening scientific and evidence-based policing, a Measurement Capturing Unit (MCU) for biometric data collection has been established at the Madurai District Armed Reserve Complex.
The initiative aims to enhance criminal identification and investigation through the systematic collection, storage, and analysis of biometric and physical measurements, as authorized under the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022. This Act has replaced relevant provisions of the erstwhile Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920, ushering in a modern and technology-driven framework for policing.
Under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022, the MCU is empowered to collect biometric data such as fingerprints, palm impressions, foot impressions, photographs, iris scans, and behavioral attributes including signatures from arrested persons, suspects, and convicted individuals.
The MCU facilitates efficient, standardized, and high-quality biometric data collection, ensuring uniformity and accuracy across cases. The comprehensive biometric repository created through this system is expected to play a crucial role in identifying repeat offenders, establishing linkages between multiple crime scenes, and thereby significantly strengthening criminal investigations and prosecutions.
The newly established facility was inspected by Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Mr. Vijayendra Bidari, IPS, along with Deputy Inspector General of Police, Madurai Range, Mr. Abhinav Kumar, IPS, and Superintendent of Police, Madurai, Mr. B.K. Arvind, IPS. The senior officers reviewed the infrastructure, technological setup, and operational readiness of the MCU, and expressed satisfaction over its preparedness for effective functioning.
The establishment of the Measurement Capturing Unit marks an important milestone in modern policing. It is expected to improve the accuracy of offender identification, create a robust and reliable evidentiary database, and further reinforce the use of advanced forensic and biometric tools in law enforcement, contributing to more effective and transparent policing in Madurai district.
