Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu: A large-scale beach cleaning programme was organized at the scenic lighthouse beach in Pazhaverkadu, located in Tiruvallur district, to protect the fragile coastal ecosystem and marine life.
The 15-kilometre stretch from Kattupalli to the Pazhaverkadu estuary, known for its serene shoreline and tourist inflow, has been facing environmental challenges due to the accumulation of plastic waste, alcohol bottles, and other debris. The growing pollution has adversely affected marine biodiversity, particularly sea turtles that visit the shore for nesting, thereby impacting their breeding activities.
To address the issue, the beach cleaning initiative was jointly undertaken by the Pazhaverkadu Bird Sanctuary, the Forest Department, and several charitable and social organizations. More than 100 volunteers, including students and local residents, actively participated in removing plastic waste and restoring the natural habitat of sea turtles and coastal birds.
The programme saw collaboration from multiple organizations, including the Tamil Nadu Coast Guard, Bisleri’s “Bottle for Change” initiative, Chennai Institute of Technology, ShecoF R Foundation, CBRT Trust, and the Pazhaverkadu People’s Action Coalition.
The collected plastic waste will be transported by Bisleri for recycling and reuse, ensuring responsible waste management.
Forest officials, social activists, community leaders, and differently-abled administrators also took part in the event, reflecting strong community participation in environmental conservation.
The initiative highlights the collective commitment of government agencies and civil society organizations to preserve coastal ecosystems and promote sustainable tourism in Pazhaverkadu.
