Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh: A large-scale road safety awareness program titled “Abhayam” was organized in Srikakulam town to promote helmet usage and responsible driving habits.
District Collector Sri Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar emphasized that wearing a helmet is not a burden but a responsibility for every motorist, as it acts as a protection shield for both the rider and their family. District SP Sri K.V. Maheshwara Reddy, IPS, highlighted that helmets are crucial in preventing fatal head injuries, noting that a significant percentage of road accident deaths involve two-wheeler riders without helmets.
A bike rally was conducted under police supervision, covering key routes from Ramalakshmana Junction to Suryamahal Junction and Arasavelli Junction. The program also witnessed the launch of the “Abhayam – Helmet Bank”, along with the unveiling of awareness posters and the Abhayam app.
The innovative Helmet Bank initiative aims to temporarily provide helmets to riders without one, encouraging them to adopt the habit of wearing helmets regularly. In its first phase, the program is being implemented in areas such as Mill Junction, Day & Night area, and Balaga.
Officials announced plans to expand the initiative to village levels by identifying “Abhayam Villages” where helmet usage is universal, with special support to such communities. Motorists were also advised to follow all road safety norms, including possessing a valid driving license, avoiding drink-and-drive, not allowing minors to drive, and refraining from overspeeding or using mobile phones while driving.
The event concluded with a road safety pledge and the felicitation of individuals who contributed by donating helmets. Several officials, including transport and police authorities, along with students, youth, and the public, participated in large numbers, making the initiative a grand success.
