Hyderabad City, Telangana: The City Police Department is moving forward with a multi-pronged strategy to eradicate the illicit drug epidemic in Hyderabad. As part of this, it is not limited to just registering cases. It is implementing a tripartite activity such as strengthening field surveillance, disrupting the network of suppliers, and bringing about transformation among consumers. As a result of special surveillance carried out in coordination with the Law and Order and Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW), 563 NTPS cases were registered from June 2025 to June this year. Through these raids, the City Police seized illicit drugs worth Rs. 22.17 crore and dismantled the gangs. On the one hand, while disrupting the supply system with special operations, on the other hand, they are rehabilitating the victims and laying a solid foundation for a drug-free environment.
A look at the details of the cases registered under the Hyderabad Commissionerate over the past year reveals the multi-pronged strategy and field-level surveillance being followed by the police to curb drugs in the city. A total of 563 NTPS cases were registered across the Commissionerate from June 2025 to June this year. If the extent of these cases is analyzed zone-wise, the maximum number of cases was registered in the Jubilee Hills zone with 116 cases, followed by 99 cases in the Secunderabad zone, 95 cases in the Golconda zone, and 90 cases in the Charminar zone. Similarly, 84 cases were registered in the Rajendranagar zone, 49 cases in the Khairatabad zone, and 30 cases in the Shamshabad zone. These statistics indicate the way in which the police have focused special attention on the drug transportation and sales network in specific areas of the city.
In this context, the Hyderabad Police strategically seized various types of banned drugs. Of the total seized drugs worth Rs. 22.17 crore, the majority was cannabis. As part of this, the police seized 2,513 kg of cannabis worth Rs. 12.56 crore. Along with cannabis, the police have also taken an iron fist in controlling other intoxicants that are seriously affecting the youth. As part of this, 55.3 liters of hash oil worth Rs. 6.91 crore were confiscated, 1626 grams of MDMA worth Rs. 1.62 crore, 129 grams of cocaine worth Rs. 64.50 lakh were seized. In addition to these, 120 grams of heroin worth Rs. 24 lakh, A strict strategy is being implemented to prevent any drugs from entering the city by seizing 570 LSE blots worth Rs. 17.10 lakhs and 220 grams of opium worth Rs. 1.25 lakhs.
The police have focused their attention not only on the supply routes of drugs but also on eliminating the main bases where local sales take place. As part of this, a massive cordon and search operation called ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ was recently conducted in Mangar Basti under Habib Nagar police station limits with 1,100 police personnel. In this operation, a large amount of ganja,Illegal liquor bottles were seized. The police have made it clear that they will continue cordon and search operations under the name of ‘Operation Thunderbolt’ in the future with the aim of controlling drugs. The police are moving forward with the cooperation of various enforcement agencies like NCB, DR, and EAGLE to completely curb the sources of drugs.
On the other hand, the process of conducting field drug tests on suspected rowdy sheeters and users under the supervision of DCP H-New has gained further momentum. So far, a total of 1550 people have been tested in the city, out of which 421 have tested positive. The police are treating the victims caught in this way from a humane perspective, rather than just punishing them. They are being shifted to Gandhi Hospital, Erragadda Mental Health Institute and prominent private rehabilitation centers and are being taken to provide them with appropriate medical assistance and special counseling to bring about transformation. This journey of the police, which combines crime control with social responsibility, is leading to positive change in the city.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner Shri VC Sajjanar, IPS said that the police department is very serious about completely eradicating the drug epidemic in the city. He warned that the state government is also giving top priority to the uncompromising fight against this scourge and that there is no question of leaving the accused, no matter how high or how many, no matter how high. He clarified that the police machinery is keeping a close watch not only on the sellers but also on the consumers who buy them. However, he said that along with the actions of the police, the role of parents is also very crucial in this fight. If we look at the recently registered cases, he said that parents are not aware that their children are addicted to drugs. He said that those who have seen it are shedding tears only after the cases are registered and they reach the police station. He said that the momentary curiosity of having a taste of it or the influence of false friendships are pushing the youth into this dark quagmire.
Therefore, he appealed to all parents to keep a close watch on their children’s movements, habits and behavior. If there are sudden changes in their behavior, anger, irritability or a desire to spend time alone, they should be alerted immediately. He warned that even a little negligence can spoil the golden future of children. If children are found to have gone astray and are addicted to drugs without knowing it, they should not hide the matter out of fear, but should provide them with medical help and counseling and start a new life.
