Visakhapatnam: To raise awareness on noise pollution and issue stern warnings to violators, in Visakhapatnam, City Traffic Police on Sunday smashed 631 modified silencers illegally used on motorcycles with road rollers. .
Over the past few years, the craze for loud silencers has grown significantly among young people, especially those riding Royal Enfield, Duke and other high-end bikes. Noise pollution caused by these noisy bikes has a negative impact on the health of many, police said.
“We have set up special teams to crack down on all vehicles that use modified silencers that cause noise pollution,” Visakhapatnam City Police Commissioner Mr. CH Srikanth IPS said, adding that modified silencers were seized from more than 600 motorcycles.
The use of modified silencers has increased noise pollution and is causing severe inconvenience to people in the city, police said. An employee at a bike parts store told police that young people choose high-sounding silencers before buying bikes.
While the original silencer of the Royal Enfield and other high-end bikes gives a normal sound, the modified silencer gives a high sound, therefore many of the young people who use these bikes are changing the silencers to get the dumbing (high sound) sounds and say it has become a style statement among the youth.
Visakhapatnam City Police Commissioner Mr. CH. Srikanth IPS said action had been taken against such motorcyclists under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Most of the motorcycles seized were Pulsar, Royal Enfield and a few other high end bikes.
The main goal behind destroying modified silencers is to never reuse them. City Police Chief Mr. Srikanth said noise pollution caused by the use of such modified silencers would have a negative impact on senior citizens, medical patients and children.
Twelve youths were caught doing bike racing and stunts on bikes on Beach Road in Vizag city. We have set up a special team to crack the bike raking based on reliable information. City police commissioner Mr. CH Srikanth IPS said seven bikes were seized.
