Kozhikode: The accused, who used various mobile numbers and devices, was apprehended after a thorough investigation by the Kozhikode Cyber Crime Police and a special squad under the Kozhikode City Police Commissioner. Sheikh Murthu Samia Hayat Bhai, a resident of Mehsena, was arrested for orchestrating fraudulent activities involving fake bank accounts. It was discovered that the accused had spent some time in the army prior to his arrest. Further investigation revealed his involvement in similar cases in Gujarat and Karnataka.
The Kerala Police are currently collaborating with authorities in various states to locate other suspects involved. The victim, a retired individual from a central government institution in Kozhikode, reported being deceived through a video call utilizing deep fake technology, leading to an extortion of Rs.40,000. Thanks to the prompt intervention of the cyber police, the money was recovered within 24 hours. The fraudster had posed as a former colleague of the complainant during a WhatsApp voice call, requesting funds for a relative’s medical procedure.
When the complainant requested a video call, the fraudster employed deep fake technology to maintain the deception. Under the guidance of Kozhikode City Police Commissioner Rajpal Meena, the investigation was spearheaded by Dinesh Koroth, the House Officer of Kozhikode City Cyber Crime Station. The investigative team included Sub-Inspector Mr. Vinod Kumar M from the cybercrime police station, as well as Sub-Inspector Mr. O. Mohandas and senior civil police officers Mr. Beeraj Kunummal and Mr. Sreejith Padiyat from the special action group. To expedite the recovery of funds in cases of financial fraud, it is crucial to report the incident to the cyber police at 1930 within the initial hour.
