Delhi: On Monday morning, the police found an elderly couple murdered at their residence in northeast Delhi’s Gokalpuri area. The couple, identified as Radhey Shyam Verma (72) and his wife Veena (68), was found with their throats slit, and their home was ransacked. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast), Mr. Joy Tirkey, some jewelry and Rs.4.5 lakh were missing from the house.
Radhey Shyam Verma, who had retired as vice-principal from a Delhi government school in Karol Bagh, had been living in the house with his family for the last 38 years. The couple’s son Ravi Rattan, along with his wife and six-year-old son, was living on the first floor of the house, while the elderly couple lived on the ground floor.
It was reported that Radhey Shyam Verma had recently taken an advance of Rs.5 lakh to sell the rear portion of their house. Rattan had last seen his parents at 10:30 pm on Sunday night. The police are currently investigating the case.
The incident has caused shock and concern among the local community, who have expressed their condolences to the family. The brutal murder of the elderly couple has once again raised concerns about the safety of the elderly in the city, especially in the wake of a series of similar incidents that have occurred in recent years.
