Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Marking the spirit of Independence Day with a powerful social message, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai Zonal Unit, in association with Stella Maris College, Department of Social Work, organized a vibrant *Drug Awareness Programme* at Besant Nagar Beach. The initiative was in line with the Hon’ble Union Home Minister’s call for a nationwide campaign on 15th and 16th August 2025 to mobilize public support against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
The event drew a massive crowd, as students of the BSW programme staged impactful street plays, dance performances, and puppetry shows, spreading strong messages on the dangers of drug addiction. Their creative efforts received loud applause and created deep awareness among the public.
Shri T. G. Venkatesh, Deputy Director General, Southern Region, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his inspiring address, he highlighted how drug abuse destroys individuals, families, and society, and called upon parents, teachers, and communities to safeguard the younger generation.
Awareness pamphlets explaining the ill effects of drugs, legal punishments for trafficking, and preventive steps for early detection of addiction were distributed among the public. Citizens were also sensitized about the MANAS helpline (1933) and the Ministry of Social Justice helpline for de-addiction support.
The programme concluded with a “Drug-Free Pledge”, as citizens vowed to build a healthier, drug-free India under the campaign theme “NasheSeAzaadi”.
Further extending the initiative, NCB Chennai also held awareness drives at Chennai International Airport, Keelambakkam Bus Stand, and organized a Walkathon at Besant Nagar Beach on 16th August 2025, reinforcing their commitment to protecting society from the menace of drugs.
