The police said today that a government school teacher in the Khandapukhuri Lower primary school in the Morigaon district was detained after it was found that he was declared an illegal Bangladeshi migrant by the Gauhati High Court upholding the verdict of the Foreigners Tribunal in June. He was involved in the National Register of Citizens or NRC exercise in Assam. Foreigners Tribunal Morigaon had declared the teacher as a Bangladeshi citizen in 2015. He had entered Assam after March 25, 1971 (the cut-off year as per the Assam Accord). Superintendent of Police, Swapnanil Deka said that Khairul Islam was detained last night near Moirabari in Morigaon district. He was earlier declared an infiltrator by the Foreigners Tribunal, Morigaon. Morigaon Deputy Commissioner, Hemen Das said that on August 13, the district administration, which had engaged Mr Islam in the National Register of Citizens update work had removed him from the job. The senior police officer said that the police launched an operation to track down Mr Islam after receipt of the judgement of the Gauhati High Court upholding the verdict of the Foreigner's Tribunal, Morigaon. He will be sent to Foreigners Detention Camp in Goalpara district this afternoon, according to the proceedings, Mr. Deka added. The official sources said that Mr Islam was one amongst the 40,000 government employees taken from different departments for NRC work across the state. He was engaged by the Morigaon district administration in Kolmoubari NRC Seva Kendra under Mikirbheta police station. Several organisations, including the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, the Krisak Mukti Sangram Samiti, the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union, had earlier expressed concern over the teacher's inclusion in the NRC work. The Deputy Commissioner had removed Mr Islam from NRC work on August 13 saying that it had come to the notice of the district administration of Morigaon regarding engagement in NRC update process of a teacher who had been declared as a foreigner by the Foreigners Tribunal, Morigaon.
