Pune: In another case of fraud, a 59-year-old individual in Pune was deceived by a man posing as a police officer, resulting in the loss of Rs. 82 lakh. The incident occurred between November 2023 and December 2023 at Pratik Nagar Housing Society in Yerawada. Tanmay Basu (59), who holds a senior position in a multinational company, filed a complaint stating that he received a call from an unidentified number claiming to be from a telecom company, alleging his number had been misused by fraudsters.
Subsequently, he received another call from someone identifying himself as Sandeep Rao, supposedly a police officer from the Mumbai Police Department. Rao informed Basu that his bank account had been misused in a money laundering case under investigation, threatening him with arrest unless he complied with demands for payment. To evade further police action, Basu transferred funds to an account provided by the impostor, resulting in a loss of Rs. 82,28,000. A case has been registered at Yerawada police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with the IT Act.
