The Maharashtra ATS and Central Intelligence have successfully apprehended Shahrukh Saifi, the accused in the tragic Kerala train fire incident that resulted in three fatalities. Saifi allegedly set a co-passenger on fire inside the D1 compartment of the Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express train. After evading capture, he was finally nabbed by the authorities at Ratnagiri railway station. The Kerala police are expected to take custody of Saifi and transport him to Kochi for further investigation.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday when the train reached the Korapuzha railway bridge, is suspected to be a well-planned criminal act with a possible terror angle, according to unnamed officers. The bodies of a woman, an infant, and a man were recovered from the tracks near the Elathur railway station, and a forensic examination was conducted by the SIT formed by the Kerala Police to gather evidence. The arrest of Saifi was commended by railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. It is believed that the accused escaped after pulling the emergency chain when the train slowed down.
