<![CDATA[Chennai: The Pattabiram police station is shortly going to be shifted to a new building which has been provided with the state of the art facilities for the police personal. The new police station building is coming up near the existing station premises which is located inside the Tamil Nadu Police Housing quarters on Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road. The Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation (TNPHC), is the administrative agency for the construction work relating to the Police Department which is carrying out the work of the project at a cost of Rs.88 lakh. The work is nearing completion. The provisions that the new building provides are a separate chamber for inspectors with attached toilets, rooms and washrooms for men and women police are provided separately. The visitors’ hall is able to accommodate around 100 people at a time. High security lock-ups and arms storage room where the armory of the police station is kept are available at the building. The entire building will come under the surveillance of CCTV cameras. The new police station project is being implemented because the ongoing work on a road over bridge is replacing the existing manned level crossing. Another reason is because the ramp of the new bridge will be positioned near the existing police station. Most of the existing police station space is also being acquired for the bridge project, which includes the laying of service lane and storm water drains. The existing police station has been built a few decades ago and is cramped without any separate rooms for men and women police personnel. The strength of the existing police station consist of fifty police personnel, including women constables who are functioning from the station. The work area consists of one room for office work, where the writer receives the complaints. A portion of the office room is used as a lock-up for suspects and only cabins are available for inspectors. A small veranda now acts as visitors’ hall. A police source said that the availability of huge space within the existing premises and the easy accessibility for complainants are the major reasons for the construction of the new building on the same location.]]>
