Chennai: As the present Director General of Police (D.G.P) will retire from his service in June end, he is being replaced by a new D.G.P to take over office as his successor. The new Director General of Police to take over office is Mr. Jalad K. Tripathy, a 1985 batch I.P.S officer, replacing Mr. T. K. Rajendran who is retiring from service this month end. Owing to the fact that Mr. Tripathy is a native of Odisha, he has served the Tamil Nadu State police in various capacities over a period of three decades. During his deputation as Commissioner of Police, Trichy, he successfully bestowed recognition of achievement to the force by introducing innovative schemes to prevent crimes that bridged the gap between the police and the public. During his deputation period the initiatives that he introduced were ‘Beat Officers’ System,’ ‘Slum Adoption Programme’ and ‘Complaint Box System’ which earned him the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, in 2005. He also bagged the prestigious ‘International Community Policing Award’ instituted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Washington, and the gold medal for ‘Innovation in Governance,’ conferred by the Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM), Glasgow. The achievements that he earned during his service as the Police Commissioner of Chennai Mr. Tripathy and his team successfully detected two sensational bank robberies at gunpoint that rocked the city. Five members of a North Indian gang involved in the robberies were tracked and shot dead in an encounter at Velachery in the city in February 2012. When Mr. Tripathy IPS was serving as DGP of Prisons, he engaged private participation in order to provide training in various income-generating skills to the inmates of central prisons across Tamil Nadu. This initiative kept the State on top of the table compared to others in the country when it came to revenue generated through the prison industry. When concentrating on the security aspect of the prison he initiated the process of establishing solar power for obtaining uninterrupted power supply with the support of IIT-M and proposed installation of German-made mobile phone jammers. The designations that Mr. Tripathy held were the DGP/ Chairman of the Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, Chennai and Superintendent of Police in nine districts, including caste-sensitive districts of southern Tamil Nadu.
