A five-year-old girl was run over by a car near her house at Dhangar Wadi in Andheri (West) at 5 p.m. on Monday. D.N. Nagar police arrested the accused on Tuesday. Senior Police Inspector Mr. Parmeshwar Ganame told that Laxmi Pujari and her mother were walking on the pavement towards their home. Suddenly she let go of her mother’s hand and ran on to the road. She came in the path of a WagonR, which could not stop in time and ran over the girl. Srinivas Rajkunda (35), the driver, stopped the car and took Laxmi and her mother to Cooper Hospital. Laxmi was declared dead before admission. Doctors said she died owing to multiple injuries to internal organs. The police recorded the mother’s statement and made inquiries with eye-witnesses. Mr. Ganame told, “Laxmi’s parents were unwilling to register a complaint against Mr. Rajkunda as he is a resident of their locality. We had to convince them to file a complaint as it is mandatory by law.” On Tuesday morning, Mr. Rajkunda was booked for causing death owing to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. A medical test revealed that Mr. Rajkunda was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
