Madurai, Tamil Nadu: Acting on a tip-off regarding the smuggling of contraband within the limits of the Kottampatti Police Station (Melur Sub-division, Madurai District) and under the orders of Madurai District Superintendent of Police Mr. B.K. Arvind, IPS, a vehicle check was conducted in the Kottampatti area around 3:30 AM on June 11, 2026. During the inspection of an Innova car bearing the registration number RJ 02 UA 8631, it was discovered that the vehicle’s actual registration number was TN 05 BR 1685 and that it was transporting approximately 521 kg of Gutkha illegally. Two individuals were arrested: (1) Vikram Kumar (28), S/o Mana Ram, of Sanchiyo Kavas, Debavas, Jalore District, Rajasthan; and (2) Kisan (25), S/o Mansa Ram, of Dhanpur Village, Jalore District, Rajasthan. Interrogation revealed that they had illegally smuggled the Gutkha from Bengaluru, Karnataka, into Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the 521 kg of Gutkha, the car used for smuggling, and three mobile phones were seized from them. A case has been registered against the accused at the Kottampatti Police Station. The Madurai District Superintendent of Police has issued a stern warning that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the illegal smuggling and sale of narcotics—such as Ganja and Gutkha—from other states in the future, and that the movable and immovable assets of both the offenders and their relatives will be frozen.
